Macpherson, James (M)

b. 27 October 1736. d. 17 February 1796. Nationality: Scottish. VIAF.
Poet, Gaelic poetry collector, and the purported translator of the Gaelic poet Ossian, although Macpherson is now understood to have authored the poems himself. Born in Ruthven, Badenoch, a Gaelic community. Studied at King’s College, Aberdeen, and probably also at the University of Edinburgh. Publications include *Fragments of Ancient Poetry Collected in the Highlands of Scotland* (1760), *Fingal* (1761), *The Works of Ossian* (1765). Biographical information: *ODNB*. (AC)
