Foscolo, Ugo (M)

b. 1778. d. 1827. Nationality: Italian. VIAF.
Major poet, novelist, critic, dramatist, revolutionary, and soldier. Served with the French in Northern Italy during the Napoleonic Wars. Afterwards went into exile in Switzerland, then London. Contributed to the *Edinburgh Review*, the *Quarterly Review*, and the *New Monthly Magazine*. Author of tragedies, lyrical neo-classical sonnets, and the first Romantic Italian novel, *Ultime Lettere di Jacopo Ortis* (1802). Biographical information: *Oxford Reference*. (CC)
