Biographer, travel writer, and naval surgeon. Born c. 1790. Travelled extensively while working as a naval surgeon and wrote about his voyages. Authored biographies of Edmund Burke and Oliver Goldsmith. Elected to the Royal Irish Academy, the Athenaeum, and the Society of Antiquaries in 1830. Knighted in 1858.
