Novelist, poet, and journalist. Sister of Maria Jane Jewsbury. Born in Measham, Leicestershire. Educated at Misses Darbys’ boarding-school. Moved to London in 1830 to study French, Latin, and drawing. Contributed to *Household Words* and *The Athenaeum* (1849-1880). Translator of articles on Carlyle and Dante from Italian. Close friends with Thomas and Jane Carlyle. Friends with Charlotte Cushman, Thomas Henry Huxley, Robert and Elizabeth Browning, Frances Cobbe, Samuel Bamford, and John Ruskin.
