Major Victorian novelist, poet, and translator. Pseudonym: “George Eliot.” Regular contributor to and effective editor of the *Westminster Review* (1851-1856). Lover of the married writer George Henry Lewes from c. late 1852, with whom she lived openly from 1854. Married John Walter Cross on 6 May 1880, after the death of Lewes.
