Novelist, playwright, songwriter, and poet of the Romantic period. Contributed to
the Norwich political reformist periodical *The Cabinet*. Admitted to the Society
of Friends in 1825 which led to extensive philanthropic work including involvement
in the abolitionist movement. Connected with major literary figures including William
Godwin, Mary Wollstonecraft, Richard Brinsley Sheridan, Walter Scott, Lord Byron,
