Poet and playwright. Born in Athens in 496 B.C.E. Died in 406 B.C.E. Wrote tragedies. Reformed plays by adding a third speaking character and increasing the size of the chorus. Author of the trilogy of plays about Oedipus, *Oedipus Rex*, *Oedipus at Colonnus*, and *Antigone*, as well as *Ajax*, *Electra*, and *Oedipus the King*.
