Poet and essayist. Alternative signature: “J. M. Hawcroft.” Pseudonym: “J. M. H.” Also known as “Dalton Mowbray.” Born in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. Apprenticed in several warehouses in Manchester. In 1875 he became employed at the publishing house Abel Heywood and Son. Staff member at the Sphinx and the Shadow. Contributed to Cassell’s Magazine, Shilling Magazine, the St. James Magazine, and the Social Reformer, among many other periodicals. Travelled around England and France.
