Published in a variety of fields, including chemistry, tidology, mathematics, education, architecture, and theology, among others. Author of 14 papers on his studies of tides (1833-1850) that received a prize medal from the Royal Society in 1837. Elected to the Geological Society in 1827 and served as president (1837-1839).
