Poet and translator. Alternative signature “J. H. Wiffen, Esq.” Lifelong Quaker. Born in Woburn, Bedfordshire. Contributed to *European Magazine* and *Gentleman’s Magazine*. Opened a school in Woburn in 1811 and taught himself languages including Hebrew, French, Italian, Spanish, and Welsh. Author and translator of *The Works of Garcilasso de la Vega* (1823).
