Poet, translator, writer, and traveller. Born in Bombay. Father was John Wilson (1804-1875),
missionary and orientalist. Educated at the universities of Edinburgh and Tübingen.
Travelled widely in United States, Europe, China, and India. Edited *China Mail* (1858-1860)
while he lived in Hong Kong, and *Times of India* (1873). Converted to Buddhism while
living in China. Published essays in *Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine*, and volume
publications include *The Abode of Snow: Observations on a Journey from Chinese Tibet
to the Indian Caucasus, Through the Upper Valleys of the Himalaya* (1875) that reprinted
