Poet, essayist, and fiction writer. Born in Liverpool. Educated at Liverpool College. Reviewer for *The Academy* and *The Star*. Friends with Oscar Wilde, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and Wilson Barrett. A founding member of the Rhymers’ Club, although left the group in 1892. Emigrated to the U. S. in 1903, moving to Paris in 1930.
