Poet, novelist, biographer, essayist, critic, and translator. Biographer of John Donne and Algernon Swinburne. Married Ellen (Nellie) Epps on 13 August 1875. Author of *Father and Son* (1907). Chief book reviewer of the *Sunday Times* (1919-1928). Contributed collections of essays to American and English magazines. Friends with Henrik Ibsen; translated many of his works and introduced him to British audiences. Closely connected with major figures in literary and artistic circles including William Bell Scott, Ford Madox Brown, Thomas Hardy, Robert Browning, Robert Louis Stevenson, Algernon Charles Swinburne, Henry James.
