Translator, poet, Sinologist, and botanist. Pseudonym: “E. C. B.” Father of Charles Arthur Verner Bowra, and grandfather of Maurice Bowra. Fought for Garibaldi’s redshirts in the aid of Italian Unification (the Risorgimento), then in c.1862 moved to China and worked for the Chinese Maritime Customs.
