Poet, short story writer, linguist, essayist, translator, musician, socialist, and private tutor. Alternative signature: “J. J. Haldane Burgess.” Born and lived in Lerwick, Shetland. Blind from 1887, and wrote with a typewriter designed for the blind. Educated at Anderson Educational Institute, Shetland, and then at the University of Edinburgh (graduating 1889).
