After his father died on 27 September 1850, Garnett followed in his footsteps and
took a post at the British Museum as an Assistant Librarian, where he would remain
for the entirety of his career and became Superintendent of the Reading Room and then
Keeper of Printed Books. Wrote extensively for the Dictionary of National Biography and the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Married Olivia Narney on 13 June 1863. Poetry volumes include Io in Egypt, and other Poems (1859), and Poems (1893). Biographical information: ODNB. (JS)
