Translator, essayist, folklorist, wool manufacturer, and politician. Pseudonym: “J. W. C.” Educated at the University of Aberdeen. Liberal M. P. for Kincardineshire (1892-1908). Author of *Some Poets of the People in Foreign Lands* (1890, 1891). *Chambers’s Journal* ledger entry for his translation “The Old Nursery Story,” published on 24 July 1880, gives his address as Balgownie Lodge, Aberdeen (NLS Dep 341/369).
