a priest in 1858. Became the Chaplain to the Duke of Marlborough in 1858. Rector of
several parishes in England (1867-1883). Moved to Scotland. Rector of St John’s, Edinburgh
(1883-1898). Canon of St. Mary’s Cathedral, Edinburgh (1898-1909). Married. Author
of *Lectures on the Gospel According to St. John* (1863). *Chambers’s Journal* ledger
entry for “In Greek Waters,” published on 18 June 1892, lists the poet as Rev. G.
