Playwright, poet, journalist, and humorist. Alternative signature: “F. C. Burnand.” Educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. Converted to Roman Catholicism in 1858. Married the actress Cecilia Victoria Ranoe on 31 March 1860, then married (on the continent) her sister in 1874. Editor of *The Glow-Worm* and on the staff of *Fun*. Became editor of *Punch* in 1880.
