Father was a cotton spinner then a manufacturer, and was ordained in 1869. Educated
at Stockport grammar school and St. John’s College, Cambridge (where he read mathematics).
Ordained as a priest in 1860, but in 1865 gave up holy orders to become a school teacher.
Author of *Poems* (1859), *Dryope and Other Poems* (1861), *Pictures, and Other Poems*
(1865), *The Sorrows of Hypsipyle* (1867), *Songs then and Now* (1876), *Songs of
