Educated at Cheltenham College and Balliol College, Oxford, where he was influenced by his tutor Thomas Hill Green. Enthusiastic supporter of Giuseppe Mazzini. Professor at University College, Liverpool, and then at the University of Glasgow. Elected to the Oxford Professorship of Poetry in 1901. Supported the Workers’ Educational Association and the English Association, and campaigned to establish English literature as an accessible school and higher education subject.
