Bethune, John Elliott Drinkwater (M)

b. 1801. d. 21 August 1851. Nationality: English.
Translator, administrator in India, educationalist. Liberal. Alternative signature: “J. E. D. Bethune.” Educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge. Entered the Middle Temple in 1827 to train as a barrister and afterwards worked for Lord Grey’s government, working on royal commissions and then drafting legislation. In 1848 moved to Calcutta to take up position on supreme council of India. Campaigned for women’s education in India, and in 1849 opened a school for Hindu girls in 1849 (later known as Bethune College). Author of *Specimens of Swedish and German Poetry* (1848).
