Poet, editor, and abolitionist. Born in Massachusetts. Contributed to *Haverhill Gazette* and the *National Era*. Editor of *American Manufacturer*, the *Gazette*, and *New England Weekly Review*. Joined the abolitionist movement in 1833. Founding member of the American Anti-Slavery Society. Elected to the Massachusetts State Legislature in 1835. Co-founder of *Atlantic Monthly* with James Russell Lowell, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Oliver Wendell Holmes. Biographical information: *ANB*. (CC)
