Poet, journalist, politician, barrister. Pseudonym: “L.” Born in Bingham, Nottinghamshire. Educated at University College, Oxford, and Lincoln’s Inn. Married twice, Georgiana Orred on 29 March 1836 and Caroline Anne Sneyd on 3 February 1885. Immigrated to Australia in 1842 and became involved in politics. Contributed to *The Atlas*. Returned to England in 1850. Writer for *The Times*. Elected MP for Kidderminster (1852-1859) and Calne (1859-1868). Opposed the second Reform Bill om 1866. Appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1868. Fellow of the Royal Society. Created Viscount Sherbrooke in 1880. Made Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Bath in 1885.
