College, Cambridge. Member of the Cambridge Apostles. Married Eleanor Mildred Balfour
on 4 April 1876. Elected to the Knightbridge chair of moral philosophy at Cambridge
in 1883 until his death. Co-founded Newnham College in 1875, and supported higher
education for women. First president of the Society for Psychical Research. His major
