Poet, Presbyterian minister, and theologian. Pseudonym: “J. M’G.” Born in Callander, Perthshire. Educated at the University of Edinburgh, and in 1868 became professor of theology at Edinburgh. Married Grace Campbell Maclean on 7 July 1857. Emigrated to New Zealand with his family in 1881, due to the poor health of his children, and became involved in educational and land reform.
