Poet. Pseudonym “A. F.” Involved in the Boston literary scene after her marriage to publisher and writer James T. Fields. In 1859 spent a year abroad with her husband, during which she expanded her circle of friends to include Charles Dickens, Alfred Tennyson, Nathaniel and Sophia Hawthorne, and Harriet Beecher Stowe. Renowned as a hostess, Fields was regularly visited by such literary celebrities as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Oliver Wendell Holmes. Served as unofficial literary assistant to her husband while he was editor of Atlantic Monthly in the 1860s. Kept a journal of the literary events and people she encountered. Works published include The Children of Lebanon (1872), Under the Olive (1881), The Singing Shepherd and Other Poems (1895), Asphodel (1866), Authors and Friends (1896), and biographies of a number of writers including her husband.
