as a bank teller before joining his father’s grain business. Member of the Pfaff Group,
a literary circle that met in Pfaff’s café in New York City, which also included Walt
Whitman. Poetry volumes include *May Dreams* (1862), *Ralph, and Other Poems* (1866),
