Brown, Thomas Edward (M)

b. 5 May 1830. d. 29 October 1897. Nationality: Manx. VIAF.
Schoolmaster, poet, and poet. Alternative signature: “T. E. Brown.” Born on Isle of Man, and preserved much of the Manx dialect through his poetry. Father was preacher and poet Robert Brown. Brother was Baptist minister Hugh Stowell Brown. Studied classics, law, and history at Oxford. Ordained in 1855, and graduated MA in 1856. Married his cousin Amelia Stowell in 1858. Spent thirty years as second master of Cliffton College, Bristol. Curate of St Barnabas, Bristol from 1884 to 1893. Poetry volumes include *Fo’c’s’le Yarns* (1889), *The Doctor and other Poems* (1887), *The Manx Witch and other Poems* (1889). Biographical information: *ODNB.* (JS)
