Poet, playwright, music historian, critic, novelist, translator, and journalist. Born
in Hendon, London. Educated in France, where he became fluent in French. Contributed
to *Pasquin*, *Puppet Show*, *Punch*, and *Pall Mall Gazette*. Collaborated with Robert
Barnabas Brough on a theatrical production. Journalist in Paris (1852). Correspondent
in Russia for the *Illustrated Times*. Married Margaret Watson on 2 February 1857.
Returned to England in 1861. Correspondent in Poland (1862-1863), Luxembourg (1867),
and covered the Franco-Prussian War. Editor of the *Graphic* (1869). Founded the magazine
