Edmonds, Elizabeth Mayhew (F)

Translator, poet, novelist, and travel writer. Pseudonym: “E. M. Edmonds.” Baptized on 19 January 1821. Educated at home where she learned English, French, Italian, and Latin literature. Married Augustus Robert Edmonds on 15 December 1849. Learned modern Greek. Travelled to Greece in 1880, and published an account of her travels, *Fair Athens*, in 1881. Translator of Greek short stories and poetry which she published in *Greek Lays, Idylls, Legends &c.* (1885) and the anthology *Poetry of Modern Greece: Specimens and Extracts* (1884). Contributed to *Woman’s World*, *Journal of Hellenic Studies*, Academy*, *Eastern and Western Review*, and *Newbery House Magazine*. Biographical information: *ODNB*. (SCM, CC)
