Translator and scholar. Born in Glasgow, Scotland. Educated at Glasgow University. Studied Arabic, Persian, and Turkish languages and literature. Travelled to France and Italy (1889). Married Ida W. E. Rodriguez in 1889. Member of the Royal Asiatic Society. Translator of Ottoman poetry including *Ottoman Poems translated into English Verse in the Original Forms* (1882) and *Verses and Translations* (1902).
