Translator and poet. Daughter of Sir Henry Bartle Edward Frere. Born in Gloucestershire.
Educated privately. Lived in Bombay, India (1863-1867) where he father was the colonial
governor, and travelled with him around the Maratha territories (1865-1866). Transcribed
many fairy tale stories told to her by her ayah and published as *Old Deacon Days*
(1868). Moved to South Africa in 1877 for her father’s next appointment. Returned
to England in 1880. Travelled to Palestine, and briefly to Egypt, in 1906. Biographical
