Liberal politician, Scottish peer, and scientist. Alternative signatures: “Argyll,” “Duke of Argyll.” Succeeded his father as Duke of Argyll in 1847. His 1866 Argyll Commission into Scottish education influenced the 1870 Education Act. Close friend of Prince Albert. Polymath, who made important discoveries in geology and ornithology.
