Poet. Born in Hardgate, Aberdeen. Educated at the University of Aberdeen. Married
Mary Souttar on 21 August 1867. Became an assistant professor of physiology at the
University of Edinburgh in 1869 where he conducted research on brains. Appointed professor
of physiology at the University of Glasgow in 1876. Original member of the Physiological
Society. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Fellow of the Royal College
of Physicians in Edinburgh (1871), and Fellow of the Royal Society (1884). Biographical
