Poet, portrait painter, and historical painter. Born in Elgin, Scotland. Married Susanna Stewart Fraser. Left the weaving profession to become an artist. Moved to Edinburgh and taught at the Royal Scottish Academy. Moved to London and became a portrait painter (1818). Elected associate exhibitor of the Society of Painters in Water Colours (1829).
