Poet, horseman, police officer, and politician. Born in Fayal, Azores. Father was
a retired Bengal cavalry officer. Emigrated to Australia from England in November
1853, and began a short career as a mounted police officer, leaving in November 1855
to become a horse breaker and steeple-chase rider. Married a Glaswegian, Margaret
Park, on 20 October 1862. Elected member of South Australian Parliament in 1865, resigning
in 1866. Author of poetry volumes *Ashtaroth* (1867), *Sea Spray and Smoke Drift*
(1867), *Bush Ballads and Galloping Rhymes* (1870). Died by suicide the day after
