Wolcot, John (M)

b. 1738. d. 14 January 1819. Nationality: English. VIAF.
Poet, surgeon, and Church of England clergyman. Pseudonym: “Peter Pindar.” Born in Dodbrooke, Devon. Educated at the University of Aberdeen. Employed as the physician to the Governor General’s household in Jamaica (1768). Returned to England in 1769 and ordained a priest in the Church of England. Moved back to Jamaica briefly from 1770-1773 before working as a doctor in Cornwall. Mentor to John Opie and moved with him to London where the two men launched their literary careers. Author of *Lyric Odes to the Royal Academicians for 1782* (1782) and *Odes to Mr Paine* (1791). Biographical information: *ODNB*. (AC, CC)
