Poet, translator, novelist, politician. Pseudonyms: “Pisistratus Caxton” and “Edmund Bruce.” Father of Robert Bulwer-Lytton. Educated at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. Lived in France from 1825-1826. Edited the *New Monthly Magazine* from 1831-33. Frequently contributed to the *Edinburgh Review*. Author of several volumes of poetry including *Ismael: An Oriental Tale* (1820), *Delmour, or, The Tale of a Sylphid* (1823), *Weeds and Wild Flowers* (1825), *St Stephens* (1860), *The Boatman* (1864), *Poems* (1865), and *The Lost Tales of Miletus* (1866).
