Poet, playwright, and actor. Born in Lillebonne, Seine-Maritime, Normandy, France. Left home at the age of 15 to become an actor. Moved to Paris in 1858 to pursue writing. Spent his time divided between Normandy and Paris. Contributed to *Le Boulevard*. Wrote his own plays as well as adaptations from Shakespeare.
