Poet, translator, and diplomat. Pseudonyms: “W” and “Whistlecraft.” Born in London. Educated at Gonville and Caius Colleges, Cambridge. MP for West Looe, Cornwall (1796-1802). Co-publisher of the *Anti-Jacobin* with George Canning (1797-1798). Worked for the Foreign Office in Lisbon, Portugal, and Madrid, Spain (1800-1809). Married Elizabeth Jemima Blake on 12 September 1816. Moved to Malta in 1818. Co-founder of the *Quarterly Review*. Close friends with George Canning. Biographical information: *ODNB*. (CC)
