B.” Author information from the Chambers’s Journal ledger entry for “Seedtime and Harvest” (published on 18 February 1860), which lists the author as Charles Birks, 18 Charles St, Clarence St, York, and the entry for “A Word with Despondency” (published on 13 October 1860), which gives the author as E. C. Birks Esq., York (NLS 341/310). The England census, marriage, and death records indicate that this is Edmund Charles Birks, who was born and lived in York, worked as a lithographer and clerk, and was married to Mary Lazenby in 1858.
