Contributed to *All The Year Round*, *The Inquirer*, *Fraser’s*, *Athenaeum*, *Quarterly Review*, and *Edinburgh Review*. Staff writer for *Household Words* (1851-1859) and *All the Year Round* (1859-1865). Editor of *The Examiner* (1861-1867) and *Old Neuwieder* (1886-1894). Professor of English language and literature at University College, London (1865). Married Mary Anne Sayer on 15 April 1852.
