Novelist, poet, journalist, and editor. Worked as a private tutor and friends with George Cruikshank and Lord Byron. Began teaching in a private boys’ school in 1816. Married Priscilla Maden Wiffen on 16 September 1821. Regular contributor to the *Literary Gazette*. Founded the newspaper *The Standard* in 1827. Editor of the *United Services Gazette* and two annuals: the *Literary Souvenir* (1824-1835) and the *Cabinet of Modern Art* (1836-1837). Biographical information: *ODNB.* (DD)
