after losing custody of her children to her husband after their separation. Also campaigned
for women’s property rights. Became Lady Stirling Maxwell upon her marriage to second
husband Sir William Stirling Maxwell on 1 March 1877. Friends with major literary
figures including Fanny Kemble, Charles Dickens, Samuel Rogers, and Mary Shelley.
