Novelist, journalist, poet, travel writer, translator, children’s writer, and Egyptologist. Pseudonym: “A. B. E.” Worked as a professional writer. Supported women’s suffrage. Traveled to Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and Turkey in 1873-1874. Helped found and run the Egypt Exploration Fund (later Egypt Exploration Society) in 1882. Awarded an honorary L. L.
