Poet, hymn writer, and Biblical scholar. Born in London. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. Ordained as a priest in 1834. Married Frances (Fanny) Oke Alford (his cousin) on 10 March 1835. Dean of Canterbury (1857-1871). Editor of *Dearden’s Magazine* and *Contemporary Review*. Contributor to *Contemporary Review*, *Good Words*, and *Sunday Magazine*. Author of several volumes of poetry including *Poems and Poetical Fragments* (1831) and *The Abbot of Muchelnaye* (1841). Close friends with Alfred Tennyson. Biographical information: *ODNB*. (CC)
