Hume, Mary Catherine (F)

Poet and campaigner for medical reform. Born in London. Married Rev. William Rothery, and changed her surname to “Hume-Rothery” in 1866. Advocated for women’s health education and admission to the medical profession. She also campaigned against mandatory vaccinations, founding the National Anti-Compulsory Vaccination League. Became a Swedenborgian member of the New Church. Author of *Normiton: A Dramatic Poem* (1857) and *Sappho: A Poem* (1862). Biographical information: *ODNB*, BL. (SP)
