Novelist, short story writer, poet, reviewer, literary critic, and professor of languages. Born in Norway. Educated at the Royal Fredriks University. Emigrated to the USA in 1869. Professor of European languages at Cornell University (1874-1880), and then Columbia College (from 1881).
