Novelist, poet, and Church of England clergyman. Actively participated in many of the period’s religious controversies and debates, including the new Christian socialist movement. Educated at Magdalen College, Cambridge. Married Fanny Eliza Grenfell on 10 January 1844. Worked briefly as a professor of English in London, at Queen’s College for Women, from 1848.
